There is a wealth of research, which shows that fathers as well as mothers are vital for the healthy emotional development of children.

For men of any age, having a child has a dramatic impact. It changes the way they see themselves, the way they feel about life and the world around them.

New fatherhood is a chance - and a challenge - to learn about themselves.

It can be invigorating and exciting; it can be scary, a daunting prospect, and sometimes for any father lonely and isolating.

We have already said that fathers are not always given the best preparation for being a father, in a practical sense - What to do at the birth? How do I change a nappy, kind of a sense? Or, more importantly, for fathers to be supported in making sense of what is going on for them at that time in their lives - How do I feel about being a father? How do I feel about my baby? My life has turned upside down, and I just feel like running away.

This is never truer than if you are a young father who is not living with his baby or partner, perhaps seeing them at the weekend with a new grandmother looking on!

`Investing in Fathers` is here to find out exactly what it's like to be a young father who is not living with their baby, and find out the best way of supporting him in being a father to his child.

Whichever way you look at it, whatever happens in the future, whether he sees his child or not; he will always be a father, and we should support him in that.
